What Is Active Release Technique and Who Is It For?

If tight muscles, restricted movement, or recurring discomfort keep coming back, the problem may involve more than the area where you feel the symptoms. Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands- on approach designed to assess and address soft tissue restrictions that may affect the way you move and feel.

At Dallas Wellness, Active Release Technique is provided by Daniel Garcia as part of an individualized approach to soft tissue and movement-focused care.

What is Active Release Technique?

Active Release Technique is a hands-on soft tissue technique used to evaluate and treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and other soft tissue structures.

Rather than simply applying pressure to a tight or uncomfortable area, ART combines precise contact with specific patient movements. The goal is to identify areas where soft tissue may not be moving optimally and address restrictions that may be contributing to

discomfort or limited mobility.

What Does an ART Session Look Like?

An ART session begins with an assessment of the area of concern and how it moves. Your provider may evaluate tissue texture, tension, movement, and areas of restriction.

Treatment is based on what is found during the assessment, ART care can look different from one patient to another.

Who May Benefit From ART?

ART may be incorporated into care for people experiencing concerns related to:

  • Muscle tightness or tension

  • Restricted mobility

  • Repetitive-use discomfort

  • Sports and activity-related strain

  • Soft tissue restrictions

  • Movement limitations

  • Recovery from physical activity

You don't have to be an athlete to receive ART. While the technique is frequently associated with sports and performance, soft tissue restrictions can develop from exercise, repetitive movements, work demands, prolonged positioning, and everyday activity.

ART vs. Massage Therapy

Although both involve hands-on work with soft tissue, ART and massage therapy are not the same.

Massage therapy may address muscular tension, relaxation, recovery, and overall soft tissue health. ART is generally more targeted and movement-specific, with the provider assessing and working with individual tissues while movement is performed.

At Dallas Wellness, these services can be used independently or incorporated into a broader care plan depending on your individual needs.

An Individualized Approach to Movement

There isn't one treatment approach that's right for every person.

Our goal at Dallas Wellness is to understand what may be contributing to your movement limitations or discomfort and determine which approach makes sense for you. Depending on your needs, your care may include Active Release Technique alongside chiropractic care, massage therapy, shockwave therapy, or other movement-focused services.
